Can You Unsend LinkedIn Messages?
On LinkedIn, the ability to retract or unsend messages that have already been sent is limited. According to LinkedIn Help, you cannot recall messages once they have been sent to your connections. This means that if you send a message, the recipient will receive it, and there is no feature available to retract this message from their inbox after it has been sent. However, LinkedIn does provide some flexibility when it comes to managing messages that you have sent.
For text messages, LinkedIn allows you to edit or delete them within a conversation, but there are some important caveats to note:
- You can only edit or delete a text message within 60 minutes of sending it.
- When you delete a message, it is removed for all participants in the conversation, not just from your view.
- Editing or deleting a message will display an 'Edited' or 'Deleted' badge to all participants in the conversation, making them aware of the change.
- InMail messages, which are messages sent to users you are not connected with, have stricter rules. You cannot delete an InMail message once it has been sent. However, you can edit an InMail message within a conversation before it is accepted or within 60 minutes of sending it.
To edit or delete a message:
- Select the conversation from your messaging inbox.
- Click or tap the More icon next to the message you wish to modify.
- Choose 'Edit' to make changes to your message and then 'Save', or 'Delete' and confirm the action to remove the message from the conversation.
It's also worth noting that you cannot delete a conversation thread from the recipient's inbox, only from your own. This means that while you can manage the visibility of messages on your end, once a message is sent, the recipient retains control over their copy of the conversation.
For situations where a message cannot be unsent or corrected, LinkedIn suggests sending a follow-up message to clarify or correct any information as needed. This approach can be particularly useful if you've sent an InMail message that cannot be edited or deleted after sending.
